In honor of National School Counseling Week, we asked our School Counselor of the Year, Lisa Wilson, some questions to gain insight into the role counselors play in student achievement across MUSD.

Lathrop High School students are gaining real-world career exposure through the City Speaker Series, a collaborative program between the school and the City of Lathrop aligned with Manteca Unified School District’s Career Technical Education initiatives. Now in its third year, the program connects students with city professionals through monthly guest speakers and hands-on field trips, helping them explore career pathways, build professional skills, and connect classroom learning to future opportunities. 

At Manteca Unified, all students are students first. Meaning, regardless of whether a student is an athlete, English learner, foster youth, student with a disability, or from any particular background, they are first and foremost a student whose right to learn, belong, and succeed comes before any label or program category.

The foundation of learning begins with early literacy! Our purpose is to ensure every student meets grade-level standards, and it all starts with reading. Our early literacy initiative supports Transitional Kindergarten through third-grade students by teaching them how to read and equipping them with the tools to decode (break down) words, empowering them to read any word with confidence. Stay tuned to see the strategies our District is using to keep young learners reading and ready to achieve grade-level standards. 

At Manteca Unified, Nutrition Education is about more than serving meals; it’s about supporting student achievement. Through scratch cooking, locally sourced ingredients, and carefully planned menus, our Nutrition Education team helps students arrive ready to learn. Healthy meals not only fuel students but also improve focus, behavior, and attendance, empowering them to reach their full potential. Because when every child has access to nutritious, delicious meals, they’re ready to learn!

Special Education is a service, not a place — and every student deserves to learn, grow, and belong in their school community. Manteca Unified is reshaping how, when, and where students with disabilities are supported alongside their peers. To support this shift, the Special Education Department and Lathrop High School co-led a districtwide professional development event for high school teachers, spotlighting Lathrop’s successful co-teaching and collaborative class model.
